NYSTCE Theatre Exam Study Guide
Candidate seeking to become a theatre educator in New York State needs to appear for NYSTCE Theatre Exam. This exam is administered under the purview of New York State Education Board. Candidate passing this exam gets the certification to teach in the state as a credible educator. Candidate should understand the aesthetic connection between theatre and culture. Eligibility for NYSTCE Theatre Exam
Candidate appearing in NYSTCE Theatre Exam needs to fulfill all the eligibility criteria listed by the board. For initial certification, candidate needs to have bachelor degree from state or national university. Candidate should also have passing scores in Liberal Arts and Science Test and Assessment of teaching Skills exam to get eligible for certification. Candidate should also have workshop certification in the following fields:-
- Prevention of school violence
- Child abuse identification
For professional certification, candidate should have master degree from state or national university. Candidate should also have three years of teaching experience in the field. Candidate also needs to pass NYSTCE Speech and Language Disability Exam.
Format of NYSTCE Theatre Exam
NYSTCE Theatre Exam includes 90 multiple choice questions and one subjective question. Each multiple choice question is complemented with four options. Candidate needs to record his answers in OMR Sheet which is checked electronically. Evaluation of this exam is done on the scale of 300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification. If the candidate falls short of the marks in the exam then he is liable to appear again for the assessment after the period of 30 days.

- Performing and producing theatre process (33%) playwriting, dramatic structure, acting, vocal techniques in acting, body language in acting, theatrical productions, theatrical performance.
- Tools of theatre and media (23%) theatrical lighting, sound production, creating props, designing sets, costume design, make up application, technical environment and theatrical production.
- Culture and theatre (17%) history, participation in theatre, role of theatre.
- Analyzing theatre (17%) theatre analysis, theatrical production, various art forms.
- One constructive response query is formed from the topic “tools of theatre and mediaâ€, which carries 10% weightings in the exam.
