NYSTCE English Exam is conducted by New York State Educators Board to grant certification to eligible educators of the state. Candidates should be proficient and competent in the core curriculum which includes literature and language skills. NYSTCE English Exam is available in three schedules - morning, afternoon, and evening. Candidates can choose any of them according to their convenience.
Eligibility for NYSTCE English Exam
Educator seeking to become an English teacher in New York State needs to pass New York State Teacher Certification English Exam. Educators certification is available in two stages initial and professional. Initial certification is for beginners and is valid for a period of three years. The basic requirement for initial certification is the possession of a bachelor's degree and the possession of workshop certification. The core requirement for professional certification is a master's degree with three years of teaching experience. Candidate should also get passing marks in Liberal Arts and Science Test and Assessment of Teaching Skills Exam to get liable for certification.
Format of NYSTCE English Exam
NYSTCE English Exam is evaluated on a scale of 300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification. If the candidate falls short of the marks then he is liable to appear again in the exam after a period of 30 days. There are 90 multiple choice questions and one subjective question in the exam. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers hence candidates should attempt each and every question for establishing concrete chances of scoring maximum marks.

Syllabus of NYSTCE English Exam includes following topics:-
- Speaking and listening skills (14%) informational speaking, literary responses and its expressions, social interaction
- Writing (22%) written texts, writing for literary responses and expressing it, persuasion, personal and social expression,
- Reading (14%) comprehension, information and understanding it, reading for critical analysis and interaction
- Literature and its fundamentals (22%) shaping social and literary works, non fiction, poetry, adolescent literature
- Language and literature (18%) historical influence on shaping the literature, themes, literature, trend and literature
Subjective question is formed from the topic Literature fundamentals and carries 10% weightings in the exam.
