NYSTCE Social Studies Exam is an assessment which tests the candidates knowledge and skills necessary to teach effectively in NY public schools. The educator should have broad understanding of fundamental concepts of history and social sciences. NYSTCE Social Studies Exam is available in two modes online and offline. Candidate who wishes to apply online can register himself on the official website of NY education board. Candidate should note that computer based testing is available from Monday to Saturday, in single schedule.

Eligibility for NYSTCE Social Studies Exam


Candidate can give the educator certification in two phases initial and professional. Initial certification is valid for the period of three years. To get this certification, candidate should have bachelor degree from state or national university. Candidate should also have two hours of workshop certification in prevention of school violence and child abuse identification program. Candidate needs to apply for professional certification after the expiration of this certification.

Format of NYSTCE Social Studies Exam


NYSTCE Social Studies Exam is composite of objective and subjective questions. There are 90 multiple choice questions and one subjective question in the exam. Scoring of this exam is done on the scale of 300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification. Candidate should attempt each query as there is no negative marking for incorrect answer. If the candidate falls short of the marks in the exam then he is liable to take the assessment again after the period of 30 days.

  • History 35% - terms and concepts of history, world history in various course of time, U.S. history in various course of time, New York State history, human rights.
  • Geography 15% - geographical concepts and terms, relationship between physical process and human activity, human culture, evolution of U.S. history.
  • Economics 12% - concepts and terms of economics, economic system, role of government in U.S. economic system
  • Government And Citizenship 16% - political issues, operation of democratic government, U.S election process, U.S. foreign Policy.
  • Skills Of Social Studies 12% - research methodologies, visual sources, judgments and conclusions.

One open ended query is formed from history, which carries 10% weightings in the exam. Candidate should craft the response in the most artistic and concise manner.
