NYSTCE Chemistry Exam Study Guide


NYSTCE Chemistry Exam is conducted by New York State Education Board to grant certification to eligible educators in the respective field. To get the certification, candidate needs to prove his/her proficiency in the core subject topics and in other areas of education. After clearing NYSTCE Chemistry Exam, candidate gets the permission to teach in New York State as a Chemistry Teacher.

Eligibility for NYSTCE Chemistry Exam


New York State Teachers Certification Examination is confined to two levels of certification initial and proficient. Initial certification is valid for the period of three years. After this period, candidate needs to apply for proficient certification. Candidate should be a bachelor degree holder and should have passing marks in liberal Arts and Science test and Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills Exam. For proficient certification candidate should have master degree with three years of teaching experience in the field.

Format of NYSTCE Chemistry Exam


NYSTCE Chemistry Exam is composed of 90 multiple choice questions and one subjective question. The evaluation scale of the exam is 100- 300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification. Total duration for completing the exam is 4 hours. Candidate should manage the time so as to attempt maximum questions with accuracy. If the candidate falls short of marks in the assessment, then he/she is liable to appear again in the same exam after the period of 30 days.

Syllabus of NYSTCE Chemistry Exam includes following topics :-

  • Fundamentals of chemistry science - 19% - historical and contemporary importance of chemistry, observation, experimentation, principles and procedures etc.
  • Structure of atom 16% - chemical and physical properties of matter, quantum theory, sub atomic particles, periodic tables, kinetic molecular theory, nuclear transformation etc.
  • Molecular structure 16% - calorimetry, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, chemical bonding etc.
  • Chemical reactions 16% - reaction rate, chemical equilibrium, redox reaction, electro chemistry, organic reactions etc.
  • Solutions and stoichiometry 13% - mole concept, chemical formula, chemical reactions, solubility etc.
  • Chemistry and environment - 10% - household chemistry, nuclear reactions, chemical reactions in environment etc.

Subjective query is formed from the heading “fundamentals of chemistry science” and carries 10% weightings in the exam
