Candidate should hold bachelor degree from state or national university. Candidate should complete pedagogical coursework and complete the fingerprint clearance process for getting the certification. Initial certification is valid for the period of three years. After 3 years, candidate is required to upgrade his/her certification to proficient level.

NYSTCE Elementary Assessment of Teaching Skills Exam is composed of open and closed ended questions. There are 80 multiple choice questions and one subjective question included in the exam. The total duration for completing the exam is 4 hours. The exam is evaluated on the scale of 300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification. Candidate should try to attempt maximum questions as there is no negative marking for wrong answer.
