NYSTCE Earth Science Exam Study Guide


NYSTCE or New York State Teachers Certification Exam is designed to assess the competency and talent of the aspiring educator of New York State. Candidate having keen interest and knowledge in geological and earth science should appear for NYSTCE Earth Science Exam. Candidate clearing this exam gets the permission from the education board to teach as an Earth Science teacher in the state. Candidate should prove his proficiency in arts, science, reading, mathematics and other general areas of education other than in core subject fields to get the certification.

Eligibility for NYSTCE Earth Science Exam


New York State Education board provides certification to the educator in two stages initial and professional. Initial certification is entry level certification and proficient certification is advanced level certification.

Initial certification - Candidate should be a bachelor degree holder from state or national university with workshop certificate in various school programs. This certification is valid for the period of three years.

Professional certification Candidate should hold a master degree from state/national university. Candidate should have three years of teaching experience. Other than this candidate needs to clear Speech and Language Disability exam to get eligible for getting the certification.

Format of NYSTCE Earth Science Exam


NYSTCE Earth Science Exam is composite of 90 multiple choice questions and one subjective question. Each objective question is associated with four options. The evaluation scale of NYSTCE Earth Science Exam is 100-300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification. If the candidate falls short of the marks, then he is liable to appear again for the exam after the period of 30 days.

  • Fundamental of earth science (25%) observation, experimentation, types, uses, features of natural resources etc.
  • Space and its systems (18%) earth, moon, sun, and life cycle of stars and interaction between them etc.
  • Atmosphere and its system (22%) cloud formation, precipitation, display data, weather forecasting etc.
  • Geological system (14%) crustal movements, shape, water erosion, evolution of life and geological time scale etc.
  • Water system (11%) ocean and earth water, its properties, features, movements, currents and waves etc.

Subjective query is formed from the topic geological system. This query carries 10% weightings in NYSTCE Earth Science Exam.
