NYSTCE Literacy Exam is administered under the board of New York State Education to grant certification to eligible educators seeking to become literacy teacher. New York State Teachers Certification Test is available in different timings and sessions. Candidate can choose any of the options according to the schedule available. Mainly there are morning and afternoon sessions in which candidate can appear for NYSTCE literacy Exam.
Eligibility for NYSTCE Literacy Exam
New York State Educators Board gives certification in two phases - initial and professional. Initial certification is entry level certification and is valid for the period of three years. After this period candidate needs to apply for advancement of this certification. Professional certification is major credential which requires master degree and three years of teaching experience in the field. To apply for initial certification candidate should have bachelor degree in the field. Candidate should also achieve passing marks in Liberal Arts and Science Test and Assessment of Teaching Skills Test to get eligible for certification.
Format of NYSTCE Literacy Exam
NYSTCE Literacy exam is composite of open and close ended questions. These questions are measured on the scale of 300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification. There are 90 multiple choice questions and one subjective question. Total time allotted for completing the exam is 240 minutes. Candidate should try to answer maximum questions as there is no negative marking for the incorrect answer.

Syllabus of NYSTCE Literacy Exam includes following topics :-
- Fundamentals of literacy 23% - literary acquisitions and development, relationship between reading, writing, listening and speaking, literacy development, formal and informal techniques, communicating results of literary skills.
- Reading assessment and instruction 45% - phonological and phonemic awareness, development and concepts of prints, application of phonics skills, word identification strategies, vocabulary knowledge and development, comprehension and skills, Reading skills, oral and written language.
- Role and responsibility for Literacy professional 22% - organizing literacy development, curriculum development, promoting literacy development, communication with literacy, professional responsibilities of media specialist.
- An open ended query is formulated from the topic “reading assessment and instructionâ€. This query carries 10% weightings in the exam.
