NYSTCE Multi-Subject Exam Study Guide


The New York State multi-subject teacher should have the knowledge and potential to teach students in NY public schools from grades PreK 9. Candidate should be significantly good in English language, mathematics and in other areas to qualify for the exam. After clearing the NYSTCE Multi Subject Exam, candidate can practice as an educator in NY public schools.

Eligibility for NYSTCE Multi Subject Exam


To appear for NYSTCE Multi Subject Exam, candidate should fulfill all the following eligibility conditions issued by the board:-

  • Candidate should hold bachelor degree from state or national university
  • Candidate should be a permanent citizen of United States
  • Candidate should clear fingerprinting rounds of the education board.

Format of NYSTCE Multi Subject Exam


NYSTCE Multi Subject Exam includes 90 multiple choice questions and one subjective question. This exam is evaluated on the scale of 300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification. Since no penalty is levied on the candidates scores for incorrect answer hence candidate should try to answer maximum questions in 240 minutes. If the candidate falls short of the marks in the exam, then he can appear again for the same test after the period of 30 days.

  • English Language (21%) fundamentals of reading development, reading comprehension, literary interaction and composition, presenting and publishing texts, personal expression, social interaction, fiction, poetry, drama, nonfiction, literature of for children and adults.
  • Mathematics (18%) formal and informal reasoning, mathematical ideas and information, number and numeration, linear algebraic relations and functions, trigonometry, measurement, probability, statistics.
  • Science and Technology (13%) fundamentals of science, earth science, chemistry, physics, theories and principles of living environment, engineering design, themes of mathematics and science and technology.
  • Social science (15%) - history of New York State, United States, geographical contexts of United States, human development and interactions, economic and political principles of New York State, citizenship of United States.
  • Fine arts (8%) visual arts, music, drama, dance.
  • Health and fitness (8%) community health and safety, physical concepts and fitness.
  • Family and consumer science (7%) child development, care, consumer economics and fitness, career development, employment.
  • Fundamentals of reading (10%) one open ended query is formed from this topic. Response for this question should be crafted in artistic, concise and creative manner.
