TExES Core Subjects
The Texas Educator Certification Examination Program offers several tests for online examination, on their sites. Between them are the two tests:
- Core Subjects EC - 6 or TExES code 291 for more than one teaching period through grade 6
- Core Subjects 4 - 8 or TExES code 211 for grades 4 to 8
These tests offer teachers and soon-to-be professionals a path into their future careers, by examining their fitness for teaching in a given theme. The goal of these two tests is to examine the knowledge and readiness of a future educator.
Eligibility for Texas Core Subjects
Entry-level and new teachers from both the state of Texas and around the USA, are eligible to take the TExES tests. The candidate first needs to have a TEA ID or Texas teaching identification, and fill out a short online sign-up on the online assessment site. After paying the fee and making sure a proposed date is open, you are all set to go.
Syllabus for Texas Core Subjects
Both of the tests have their own subjects, the Core Subjects EC - 6 test has the following:
- English Language Arts and Science of Teaching Reading
- Mathematics
- Social Studies
- Science
- Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education
The Core Subjects 4 - 8 have a different set and they include:
Format of Texas Core Subjects
Both of the Core Subjects tests are computer-administered and have selected-response questions. A different number of questions and set of times is needed to finish the tests, when it comes to the Core Subjects EC - 6 tests, these are:
- English Language Arts and Science of Teaching Reading with 75 selected-response questions and a time frame of up to 1 hour and 45 minutes
- Mathematics with 47 selected-response questions and 1hour time frame
- Social Studies with 41 selected-response questions and 35 minutes to finish them
- Science with 52 selected-response questions and up to 40 minutes
- Fine Arts, Health, and Physical Education with 52 selected-response questions and a 40-minute time frame
Next comes the Core Subjects 4 - 8 exam, which is also computer-administered and has the following times and questions:
- English Language Arts and Reading with 74 selected-response questions and a time frame of up to 1 hour and 55 minutes
- Mathematics with 42 selected-response questions and 1 hour and 5 minutes
- Social Studies with 42 selected-response questions and up to 50 minutes
- Science with 42 selected-response questions and again a 50 minute time frame
Both of these tests will hold a five-hour appointment time, with a 15-minute introduction video and agreement signing time.
How to Apply for Texas Core Subjects
The candidate needs to first register online on the TECEP site, where tests like the AAFCS, TASC, and TExES are available. After choosing which test to apply to, a fee is needed to be paid in advance. After that, a date on which to take the test is needed. These tests are available almost every day, from Monday to Saturday, at different testing sites around the USA. When it comes to documentation, a teacher needs only their TEA ID or Texas teaching identification number. A fee of $166 with $58 for a separate subject exam, for both exams, is needed.
Scores for Texas Core Subjects
All TExES scores are rated between 100 and 300 points, which means a passing score is everything above 240 points. It is the same for both of the Core Subjects tests, a score of 240 is needed. These tests are not reported as passed or not passed, since there is no passing score overall but only a score for each category. After finishing the test, preliminary results are available in a short time period at the testing sites. Official scores are available online on certain dates at 10.00 PM CST.
