TExES Computer Science Exam


Texas state Education or the State Board for Educator Certification - SBEC and the Texas Education Agency - TEA proposes that every soon-to-be educator has to take a certification before conducting classes and starting to teach in Texas public schools. One of these tests, for the field of computer science, is the TExES Computer Science Exam 8-12 or TExES 241. This test is meant for educators in classes from grade 8 to grade 12. This means the goal of these examinations is to make sure that every entry-level educator has the needed knowledge for teaching in public schools under the theme of Computer Science.

Eligibility for TExES Computer Science Exam


All teachers from the state of Texas and all around the USA, and at the beginning of their career, can apply to take this test. It doesn’t matter if they wish to teach in public or private schools, they are eligible. As long as their background is in the field of computer science, everyone can apply for taking this test. When it comes to documentation, one needs a TEA ID or identification number in public teaching in the state of Texas and an online account.

Syllabus of TExES Computer Science Exam


The TExES Computer Science 8-12 exam covers the following four domains:

  1. Technology Applications Core
  2. Program Design and Development
  3. Programming Language Topics
  4. Specialized Topics

The domains follow one purpose, to make sure the educators fill out certain competencies. Each domain covers at least one of the educator standards and competencies. These competencies, which every teacher needs to fulfill, are:

  • The teacher knows technology terminology and concepts
  • They know knows how to use technology tools to solve problems
  • Knowledge on how to plan, organize, deliver and evaluate in the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to their students
  • The teacher is good at problem-solving strategies and program design
  • Shows knowledge in software development and implementation
  • The teacher know terminology and programming languages and paradigms
  • The teacher uses data types, data structures, and codes
  • The teacher uses statements and control structures in coding
  • The teacher uses statements and control structures in algorithms
  • Shows knowledge in mathematics, robotics, digital forensics, and game, and mobile application

Format of TExES Computer Science Exam


The TExES Computer Science Exam 8 - 12 is a CAT or Computer Administered Test. The questions come in a number of 100, and all of them are selected response types. This means, after selecting one of the multiple-choice answers, depending on the correctness of the answers follows the next question. When applying for an assessment date, one needs to take into consideration that the appointment can last up to 5 hours. This is a timed test and the time table looks like this:

  • 15-minute long introduction video for using the computer test and for signing a compliance agreement
  • 4 hours 45 minutes for taking the TExES test or 100 questions

How to Apply for TExES Computer Science Exam


Every entry-level teacher with a background in Computer Science can apply, after getting a TEA ID. First, they need to register online, apply to take the test, and pay in advance a fee of $116. After that, they are eligible to take the test in the next few months. A test can be taken anywhere in the USA at designated testing centers, after choosing a date for the exam.

Scores for TExES Computer Science Exam


The TExES tests are scored on scales from 100 to 300, which means a passing score is 240 points and above. The total score, if considered to be 100%, consists of different percentages depending on the domain of the test. These are as follows:

  • Technology Applications Core - 12.5%
  • Program Design and Development - 35%
  • Programming Language Topics - 40%
  • Specialized Topics - 12.5%

The final scores are available online to the newly certified teachers, which means on certain dates or score report dates at 10.00 PM CST.
