Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations


The Minnesota Board of Teaching in association with the Evaluation system group of Pearson has introduced Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examination- MTLE. These tests have been designed and developed in alignment with the regulations set by Minnesota and that includes the content standards for teachers and the Minnesota Board of teaching rules.

The tests measure the ability of the candidate and their proficiency in the basic skills, pedagogy, and concerning content areas. These tests are entirely based on Minnesota policies for every field.

Eligibility for Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations

Candidates who wish to seek an initial license are required to demonstrate their basic skills, competencies and qualify for the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations. Candidates seeking an initial license can demonstrate basic skills competencies through MN NES- Essential Academic Skills examination, the ACT plus Writing, and can even appear for SAT.

Pedagogical and content area-specific knowledge is assessed through the MTLE. Candidates can visit the licensure requirements to get the complete details. These are available on Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standard Board website.

Please Note- Candidates who are already licensed and wish to add another license are required to take only the content-area examination in the new licensure field.

Format of the MTLE Exam

The exams are computer-based exams which can be taken around the year. The candidates are given one hour to complete the reading section which has 48 questions, 1 hour and 45 minutes for the writing section which has 33 multiple-choice questions and two writing assignments), and 1 hour and 15 minutes for 50 math multiple-choice questions.

Syllabus for MTLE Exam

For candidates to qualify as a teacher for the University of Minnesota, they must pass all three essential academic skills exams or must complete the three sets of tests.

Essential Academic Skills

Essential Academic Skills includes 3 subtests

  • Reading- Allotted time to complete exam is 1 hour- 48 questions.
  • Writing- Allotted time to complete the exam is 1 hour and 45 minutes: 33 MCQs and 2 writing assignments
  • Mathematics- Allotted time to complete the exam is 1 hour and 15 minutes: 50 MCQs

Candidates may take one, two, or all of them together for the test.
