Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) Test

Officer Aptitude Rating tests are utilized by the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guards. OAR Test is a subset of Aviation Standard Test Battery and candidate’s performance is evaluated to identify whether or not they are qualified for officer training. It is a standardized test that determines the skills and abilities of those who wish to become officers.

Eligibility for Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) Test


To be eligible to appear in the OAR Test, a candidate must fulfill the following criteria-

  • The candidate must be a US Citizen
  • Age should be between 19-35
  • The candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree

If the candidate meets the following criteria, then he can register for the exam and apply for the officer training program.

Syllabus of Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) Test


OAR test includes core tests in subjects like-

  • Mathematics skill test
  • Mechanical Comprehension
  • Reading

ASTB-E test includes a portion of OAR. Therefore, it is up to the candidate to decide whether he wants to appear for the complete ASTB-E test or just OAR. When undertaking the exam for OAR, he will appear for 3 of the 7 subsets.

The test is aimed at measuring the candidate’s understanding of these principle subjects and whether or not he possesses the fundamental skills to undergo the officer training program.

Format of Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) Test


The format of the exam is simple and covers the following-

  • MCQ - Multiple Choice Questions
  • Candidates are allotted 1 hour time to complete 3 subsets in the exam.
  • Exams can be administered in written as well as online format.

How to apply for the OAR Test?

A candidate interested in undertaking an OAR exam can make a specific appointment to take the exam at a location that works best for them. The exam is offered at 250 registered locations and include military institutes, Naval officer recruiting stations. The exam is free for the qualified candidates.

Scoring for Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) Test

In the OAR exam for Naval Officer Candidate School, candidates are given a cumulative score and they range from 20 to 80. The Average score in the exam ranges from 40 to 60 and the minimum score candidate needs to qualify will depend upon which core or the branch he is interested to join. For the Navy, candidates need to score a minimum of 35 and above.
