PECT PAPA Exam


Pennsylvania Department of Education- PDE together in association with the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson in 2010 delivered the Pennsylvania Educator Certification Tests program. It is responsible for providing Teacher Certification Tests for prospective Pennsylvania Educators. These tests were first administered in April 2012. These were developments in alignment with Pennsylvania regulations and standards for the teachers.

It is composed of several tests including PAPA- Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment. PAPA test has been designed as a set of test objectives that follows a detailed outline that explains the skills and knowledge of the candidate.

Eligibility for PECT PAPA Exam

Anyone who wants to be a teacher or educator in Pennsylvania should take this test. Undergraduates seeking initial certification are eligible for the Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment (PAPA), as well as the relevant certification area tests.

Syllabus of PECT PAPA Exam

The examination for the PECT PAPA exam involves the following subject areas or the three modules. Candidates can take one or more modules at the same time-

Reading

The reading section covers the following-

  • Determination of the meaning of the words and phrases used in several texts.
  • Recognizing purpose, main idea, and organization of a variety of texts.
  • Analysis and evaluation of the ideas and information provided in various texts.
  • Making inferences from the information and ideas presented.

Mathematics

The mathematics section covers the following-

  • Understanding of the numbers and number systems.
  • Applying principles of algebra to expression and equations.
  • Application of the principles of algebra to linear and nonlinear functions.
  • Understanding of measurement of concepts and geometry principles.
  • Demonstration of the knowledge of data, statistics, and probability.
  • Understanding of problem-solving techniques, reasoning, and mathematical communication.

A formula page module and a standard calculator screen are provided to the candidates during the mathematics module exam.

Writing

The writing section covers the following-

  • Understanding effective writing techniques.
  • Understanding concise and coherent writing.
  • Understanding grammatical writing.
  • Understanding of the writing techniques and conventional Standard American English.
  • Demonstration of the ability to develop focused and organized analytical writing.

Format of PECT PAPA Exam

  • PECT PAPA exam is a computer-based test.
  • Reading: 36- selected-response items/questions
  • Mathematics: 36- selected-response items/questions
  • Writing: 36- selected-response items/questions. Out of this, it has 2 sentence correction assignments and 1 constructed-response assignment.

Allotted time

  • Reading- 45 minutes
    • Mathematics- 75 minutes
    • Writing- 75 minutes
    • Candidates are provided with 15 minutes for a computer-based testing tutorial.
    • Candidates who undertake all the 3 modules during an ongoing single test session can take 15 minutes to break between each module.

    Scores for PECT PAPA Exam

    All three modules can be taken as one test appointment. It can be qualified by meeting or exceeding the minimum qualifying score on all 3 modules. The minimum qualifying score is-

    • Reading- 220
    • Mathematics- 193
    • Writing-220

    The reading and Mathematics module's preliminary test results are available at the test center after the test session. And reports are made available within 10 business days after testing.

    Writing Score modules are available within 20 business days after the test is completed.

    How to apply for the PECT PAPA Exam?

    Candidates can apply for the exam by appointment round of the year. The examination sites are located throughout the US, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and Canada.

    The applicable fees for all the 3 modules are-

    • Reading- USD 37
    • Mathematics- USD 44
    • Writing- USD 37
    • All three modules- USD 110

    Financial Assistance Vouchers

    Fee waivers are made available to college students who meet the following criteria-

    • They must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.
    • They must be currently receiving financial aid in any form.
    • Note- Fee waiver is made available once per year. Candidates are required to submit a fee waiver form before registering for the test.

      Strategies for success during the exam

      The strategies that will be helpful for you when taking the exam-

      • Candidates should read, and follow the directions provided in the test carefully.
      • The best response should be determined by evaluating all the provided options carefully.
      • Candidates should ensure to attempt all the questions as they will not be penalized for an incorrect response.
      • Effective time utilization is important as the remaining time can be utilized to check on the accuracy of the answers.
