Iowa Test of Basic Skills Test Preparation and Study Guide
The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) is a nationwide standardized norm reference test that is administered by the University of Iowa. The Iowa test of basic skills evaluates the skills and achievements from kindergarten to grade 8. It delivers detailed information about the student's development skills and their ability to think critically.
ITBS - Iowa Test of Basic Skills Test Format
In the ITBS exam the students are tested over the subjects and their skills in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. The ITBS is administered at the beginning of the school year to students enrolled in grades 3,5 and 8 and the test produces development standard scores. In ITBS the national percentile ranks are also marked that compares the scores of the students from different schools and districts. Here is a brief review of the content of the ITSB exam.
- Language
The Language tests of Levels 5 and 6 measure students' abilities to understand linguistic relationships -- how language is used to express ideas. The Vocabulary section is for students in levels 5 and 6 where the candidates are required to listen to a word or words and choose a pictorial response option. In the Word Analysis section, the candidates are tested on their word recognition skills. The reading comprehension section includes a number of questions where the students are required to answer after going through the given passages. The listening section features a number of questions that are to be answered. These are generally multiple-choice questions.
- Mathematics
The Mathematics test at Levels 5 and 6 consists of questions testing basic mathematics knowledge, problem-solving and maths solving skills. This section can also include the areas covering numeration, number system, geometry measurement, and other simpler mathematical problems. The level 7 and 8 has a separated test and deals with mathematical problems featuring numeration and number systems, whole numbers, geometry, measurement, fractions, currency, and number sentences.
- Social Studies
Only the Levels 7 and 8 batteries contain a Social Studies test. All questions are presented orally and the responses are pictorial. The content of the questions is taken from geography, history, government, economics, sociology, and the other social sciences.
- Science
This section is also included in section 7 and 8 . the areas generally focused in this section include the natural sciences and physical sciences and the methods and practical process used in science.
