- Elements of design 15% - elements of art, principles of design, visual arts as communication.
- Culture of visual arts 33% - visual arts and history, culture , ancient culture work, work of art from different countries and continent including North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe.
- Aesthetics of visual arts 19% - analyzing and interpreting art work, relation of art work with other art, opportunities and career option in arts.
- One constructive response query is formed from the topic culture of visual arts; this query carries 10% weightings in the exam. Candidate should form this query in the most concrete and concise manner.

NYSTCE Visual Arts Exam includes 90 multiple choice questions and one subjective question. Total duration for completing the exam is 240 minutes. Candidate should try to attempt maximum questions as there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. NYSTCE Visual Arts Exam is evaluated on the scale of 300, out of which 220 are the minimum marks required to get the certification from the board. In case the candidate falls short of the marks in the exam then he/she is liable to take the assessment again after the period of 30 days.
