Orthopaedic Technologist Exam
Orthopaedic Technologist Certification is a certification examination that is written and executed by the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT). The certification exam has been designed to determine whether an individual possesses the necessary knowledge and skills in Orthopaedic applications in terms of surgery procedures, patient assessment techniques, etc. The exam is mandatory for receiving the technologist certification.
Eligibility for Orthopaedic Technologist Certified Exam
Eligibility rules to undertake the Orthopaedic Technologist Exam-
- An individual must possess experience for 2 years to undertake the certification examination.
- Individuals who have completed a structured Orthopaedic program are eligible.
- NBCOT recognizes that Certified or Licensed Athletic Trainers who meet many of the requirements or the guidelines that coincide with Orthopaedic Technologist Certified are eligible.
- 1 year- 3 category 1A credits.
- 2 years - 6 Category 1A credits
- 3 years - 9 Category 1A credits
- 4 years - 12 Category 1A credits
- 5 years - 15 Category 1A credits
- 6 years - 20 Category 1A credits

Format of Orthopaedic Technologist Exam

The examination is based on 165 MCQs- Multiple Choice questions, out of which 150 are scored and 15 that are not scored are related to the following-
- Patient Assessment (34 questions)
- Casting, Splinting, and Orthopaedic Devices (70 questions)
- Traction (19 questions)
- Surgery (27 questions)
Scoring in the OTC- Orthopaedic technologist certification exam is based on the score which is determined by the panel of OTCs throughout the country. The examination is scored on the 100-1000 score range and the passing score for the OTC examination is set at 700. 3 hours are provided to complete the exam.
Candidates are provided 3 hours to complete the exam and their performance is evaluated based on the correct responses that equal or exceed the cut-off as set by the NBCOT. To be eligible and register for this exam the candidate must be certified as an Orthopaedic technologist or should be certified as an Orthopaedic physician assistant with 1 year of experience.
