The CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE) tests the students in aspects of their academic literacy that is considered important for success in upper-division studies by CUNY faculty. The CPE has been designed to resemble typical college assignments in which reading material, data or observations are responded by written answers. The CPE also tests candidate's skills developed through the course work that the candidate has taken: reading and interpreting text books and materials of general interest.
Format of The CUNY Proficiency Examination:
The CUNY Proficiency Examination consists of following two tasks:
Task I - Analytical Reading and Writing:
The candidate is given two reading sections, one of which is to be studied in advance while the other is to be studied at the time of testing. The candidate is required to write an essay establishing a relationship between specific elements of the two given reading sections.
Task II - Analyzing and Integrating Information from Graphs and Text:
The candidate is given a set of materials (two charts or graphs and a brief reading passage) based on the similar topics and will be asked to state the main claim of the reading selection and discuss the extent to which the data in the charts support or challenge that claim.

Format of ACT Exams
English
The first section is the 45-minute English test. Covers usage/mechanics and rhetorical skills.

Maths Exam
The second section is the 60-minute Maths exam.

ACT exams permit the use of calculators with paper tapes. This section has five choices instead of normal four choices.
Reading
